Kathmandu, Feb 20 (Suraj Hazare Dahal): Hundreds of Sadhus have gathered in Pashupatinath temple of Kathmandu to celebrate Maha Shivaratri festival which falls tomorrow. Every year thousands of Hindus downpour in Kathmandu on this occasion. Pashupatinath Temple is regarded as one of the holiest Shiva shrines in the world. Shivaratri is not just the festival to worship Shiva but it is becoming a ‘heaven’ for youth to take puff of marijuana.
Nepali and Indian sadhus can be seen in Pashupatinath premises smoking marijuana and warming themselves around the fire. Though they are not allowed to sell or allow pilgrims to consume marijuana, people were busy buying cigarette sticks filled with gaaja. Along with devotees, foreign tourists were also seen smoking marijuana in the premises of Pashupatinath. Most of the Sadhu says that marijuana is not a drug but it’s a prasad and medicine to cure many diseases.
Although planting, selling and consuming of marijuana is banned by government there are many traditional medicine linked with it. Many farmers in village area uses marijuana to cure diarrhea in domestic animals.Sadhus have covered their body with ash and decorating their body parts with white and orange colour.
Pashupatinath premises has been beautifully decorated with flowers and light. The Pashupatinath trust has been providing free wood and food to sadhus. Come tomorrow, the Pashupati temple premises will be teeming with thousands of people attending the Mahashivaratri festival.
