People protest against government as it said yes to tax on books

Kathmandu, Feb 27: Peaceful protest has started across the country against the government decision to impose 10% tax on trade of foreign books. Programme was conducted in Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu by civilian against the tax. Leader from Nepali Congress party, Gagan Thapa said that it is autocratic decision to impose tax on knowledge. Last year, the government passed the order of levying an additional 10 per cent additional tax on books imported from outside the country.

Menawhile Finance Minister Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada has said that the government will not withdraw tax imposed on trade of foreign books. Speaking at the regular press meet held at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology today, Dr Khatiwada, who also holds the CIT portfolio, said the trade of books is also a trade, so tax is applicable in the income made from the sale of books.
